A quick hello

I’m just popping in to say hi!

Once again the blogg is suffering from lack of love! But there is a reason. We are in the midst of moving into one of the apartments at the guesthouse. Which amongst other things, means chaos, and virtually no internet connection! But more organised days are ahead!

This also means that I can add some posts about our home renovation projects. Our goal is to do this as environmentally and eco friendly as possible.

We are currently also trying to find our chicken killer culprit :(. Three so far. First we thought it was a fox. But, we are not sure now. The first time two were killed, but left virtually untouched still in the chicken run. The third chicken was killed yesterday, in daylight, and also left outside, though its abdomen had been eaten. If it had been a fox, we are pretty sure he would have taken them with him, and he wouldn’t have attacked in day light either. We are thinking that it may be some ferret type of animal as we have seen them in the past. Any ideas any one?

Anyway, hope life is being good to you all.

Djura Bok & Pappersverkstad

I must just share with you the wonderful day I have had.

Today I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try my hand at book binding with lovely Linda who has Djura Bok & Pappersverkstad.

In her amazing boutique and workshop, Linda holds various courses throughout the year varying from making your own books, to folding and transforming beautiful paper into unique Christmas decorations. I can highly recommend her courses to those of you who are even slightly creative (I also highly recommend a visit to her shop, it truly is magical). These courses are especially fabulous now, just in time for Christmas. There are endless possibilities of things you can create for gifts, decorations and wonderful things for you and your family. Keep an eye open for Linda’s courses, and I am pretty sure that if you are a group of friends/work colleagues etc, that Linda will tailor make a course after your needs. Sketch books, folders, photo albums, recipe books, gift boxes and even personalised paper stationary for your company. The only limits are your fantasy. Just in one day I managed to make 5 different books, using techniques that I will be able to use at home too. I loved it!

Here are some pictures of my books (unfortunately you are going to have to put up with pictures from my phone – I still can’t find the battery to my camera! – so I apologise for the poor quality, but you get the idea)

I hope to have some of Linda’s books in our shop in the future. And Linda – I’ll be back!

Planet Café

Tonight we have our first Planet Café (in association with Studiefrämjandet) at 19 – 20.30.

This will be every last Thursday of the month. We’ll discuss how we can ‘change the world’, through changing small things we do at home, with our family and in our community, we’ll share tips, ideas and some laughs too. The focus will be on actually doing rather than merely talking! 😉 We all think that changing the world sounds so big, and can sometimes feel helpless. But all if we all just changed small things and did the best for our family and our own home environments, then we would in fact be changing the world collectively! It really is that simple.

I’ll write more about Planet Café in the coming few days. But all I wanted to say was YOU ARE ALL WELCOME THIS EVENING! 🙂 There will be tea, coffee and scones for sale too (with lemon curd of course)!

Peace and Love

Is what we should experience every day!

Back and re-charged from our break, I thought I would tell you about our summer. So let’s start with the exciting Peace and Love incident! 😉

Some of you already know about our P&L experience, but it’s good to get it down on ‘paper’ so to speak. So here is the story:

As you all know, at the beginning of the summer we opened our little organic and local food shop in the barn here at the guesthouse. This is something I have been wanting to do for years actually, the original plan (before we had the guesthouse), was to open it in our barn at home. Good food is extremely important to my family and I, food free from nasties and as natural as you can get. Sounds simple, but in fact it seems to get harder and harder to find products you can trust, especially if you spend time researching what actually goes into our food. Sometimes the things you even believe to be good for you are far from it. I was getting sick of having to research and read labels constantly, and wished I could find somewhere that I could just go and buy things without having to worry about the ingredients. So I decided to take things into my own hands, and this idea was basically the beginnings of the road that led us to buying the guesthouse.

Back to the shop. The opening was a huge success, and simultaneously we had an article printed about us in a local paper which helped spread the word outside of Leksand. In the week after the opening, 2 young ladies from Borlänge (a town almost 40 kilometers away from us), came to look around after seeing the article about us. We talked a little about my plans and ideas, and about what inspired the shop. I thought nothing of it really, just how nice they were, and how lovely it was that they had taken the time to come and visit all the way from Borlänge. Then after they left, I thought no more about it.

About a week later, I received a call, a very exciting call. The young lady introduced herself as Therese, and said she was from the ‘Peace and Love Foundation’, and that she and her friend had been to the shop the week before. Of course I remembered the both of them. She then proceeded to tell me that the P&L Foundation were going to award us a grant (miljöstipendiem) and invited us to come and accept the grant at the soon to be P&L Festival (a festival which is fast becoming Swedens most well known). To say I was excited, happy, thankful and in disbelief was an understatement. I even had to look up the telephone number she was calling from after the call, just to check that it wasn’t a prank!

The big day arrived and we arrived at the festival very excited and nervous. We were kindly shown around the area by Therese, and pretty much as the festival opened we accepted our grant at the Peace and Love Foundation site within the festival. The grant was given to us by the Foundation and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, in a little ceremony with others that had also recieved grants in other categories.

At the ceremony Therese gave her motivation about why she chose us, which I will quote here (in Swedish – find it translated at the bottom of the page):
‘Längs riksväg 70 ligger en liten oas där närproducerat och ekologiskt samsas på hyllorna.
Det är modigt att starta eget, och att göra det med en sån kärlek till naturen och sin omgivning ger oss andra hopp.
Det går att skapa förändringar, och det är aldrig försent att göra världen lite grönare!
Årets vinnare är Leksands Gästhem.’

The rest of the day was spent looking around the festival and checking out the bands. A great day was had by us both.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Therese. Acknowledgment and encouragement of ones actions goes a long way. Therese and the P&L Foundation have made me believe in my ideas even more, I thank you for that. This was of course encouragement on a large scale, but even encouragement on a little scale goes a long way. Never be afraid to tell someone that they are doing a good job, that they inspire you or you respect what they do, it will most definitely give them energy to carry on.

We can all change the world, we can all give each other hope. And we can absolutely all give out peace and love. We are all powerful enough to change things, big and small. Even the tiniest things add up into something big. Never stop believing that you can make a change. Our decisions and actions are the most powerful tools we have. Use them to make a better future. I believe in YOU!

I’ll leave you with some words from the P&L website about this years theme (in Swedish):

Holy Moly what a summer!

HELLO!!!!

I am extremely disappointed that I had no time to update the blog this summer. I was merely too busy. Our first summer season is more or less over now, and what a season it has been. Lots of fun, hard work, mistakes made, lessons learned but in general it went great. We are still here, even though at times I felt like I couldn’t go on. I know now what is in store, and I welcome the challenge with open arms!

We are now getting ready for the first Farmers market of the season this Saturday. We have been part of the Farmers market for a couple of years now as ‘Sandbacken’, this year we will be there as Leksands Guesthouse. Check out their website for more details.

I’ll post more about our summer soon, but for the time being, here’s my easily remembered cordial recipe that works for pretty much all berry’s and fruit (I am this very second making red and black currant cordial).

Per liter of berries, use 3 dl water (eg: 2liters berries, 6 dl water and so on)

Place all berries/fruit and water in a large sauce pan

(at this point you can go wild and throw in some spices and stuff, for example a vanilla pod, cardamom, mint leaves or cinamon – whatever takes your fancy!)

Bring to the boil, then let simmer for about 10 minutes

Then poor everything through a muslin cloth and let it run/drip into another saucepan or bucket for a couple of hours

Measure the cordial that you have, and per liter of cordial, add 6 dl sugar (eg, 2 liters cordial, add 12dl sugar)

Bring to the boil until the sugar melts, then simmer for a couple of minutes whilst you ‘skim’ the cordial (i.e. skim off the bubbly layer from the surface – this is what can start to mould in your bottle if you don’t bother with this step).

Then pour into warm sterilised bottles and voila!

This will last at least a year unopened in a cool dark place, and several weeks once opened in the fridge. But I’m pretty sure you’ll drink it all up in no time!

A shop in the making

A creative process

All of this would not have been possible without our WWOOFers that helped us paint, build and clean: Jules, Vincent, Matt and Fidi. Thankyou to you all!!

Invigningen av Gårdsbutiken

What a great opening! A big thank you to everyone involved; wwoofers, producers, helpers, friends, family and of course to our wonderful new customers!

Here are some pictures from the weekend:

Our first delivery has arrived!

It’s very exciting, almost like Christmas! We have just received our first delivery of organic products for our ‘Gårdsbutik’. These products are not part of our local line, but part of our organic line, so that we can offer a wider product range to our customers. I must admit, I have taken home things that I like, as it is so hard to know what people want. But I love all the products, and everything available is something I would buy for myself and my family (and I am very hard to please when it come to taking care of what we put in and on our bodies!).

I especially love the baby products. These include a natural pacifier (for those of you who want an alternative to the mass produced, and chemical loaded pacifiers on the market), organic baby wipes, and my favourite baby food label ‘Ella’s kitchen’, all organic with no nasty additives.

We also have gluten-free products (organic, gluten-free products are hard to find here, I think we are going to be the only ones in this area with this range of products), including pasta, cookies and raw whole food bars, organic chocolate, and so much more to come. I just have to stop myself from eating it all up before the 18th of June!

We also have a range of organic shampoo, conditioner and shower gel products to offer our guests here at Leksands Gästhem (these will of course be available in the shop too), and of course natural fluoride free toothpaste as well.

And what a bonus for me that I will be able to buy all my favourite products in my own shop! I’m a lucky girl.
